Why you should rent your party wardrobe this festive season

Holly Whittaker

One of our favourite things of the festive season, aside from the indulgence and quality time with our loved ones, is to get seriously dressed up. No matter the occasion, we will be making the most of party season by wearing head-to-toe sequins and our favourite dresses to dance the night away in. That doesn’t mean we’ll be splashing out on trend-led occasionwear that can only be worn one month out of the year however. Instead, we are injecting that dose of newness into our capsule wardrobes with rental fashion.

“Party-season lends itself best to rental, particularly given that you may not wear a sequin dress 30 plus times and be able to justify the purchase,” says rental platform Hurr co-founder Victoria Prew (and we couldn’t agree more). By opting to rent for party ensembles, you’re still getting that dose of newness, without harming the planet.

Plenty of us are already embracing the world of rental, with many of the platforms seeing an increase in audience, even despite Covid-19 social restrictions last year. By Rotation’s founder Eshita Kabra-Davies, who launched the rental app in 2019, says users grew from 12,000 to 25,000 since the UK first went into lockdown on 23 March. At rental platform My Wardrobe HQ, co-founder Sacha Newall saw a similar spike in interest with a 50 per cent increase in stock listed by brands and private lenders, according to the Guardian.

If you’re new to the world of rental fashion, we promise its not as daunting as it might seem. As we all become painfully more aware of the impact that the production of clothing is having on our planet, doing your research on how to rent or rent out your own wardrobe this party season is vital.

Many businesses are now offering great brands and styles available for loan; here are seven of our favourites to use over the festive season or bookmark for your events next year and beyond. For now, we’ve handpicked our favourite pieces to rent and wear for the festive season.

Rotate via Hurr

“With several weeks to go until Christmas, rental demand at Hurr is reaching an all-time high with our top party rental brands experiencing back-to-back rental requests. Just proof that rented sequins don’t sparkle any less,” Prew tells us.

Rotate is a must-wear brand for party season, with its nod to the Eighties with big extravagant bows, it’s a real ode to dressing up. Team this mini with your favourite party shoes to dance the night away in.

Anouki via Rotaro

“At Rotaro, we exist to help you wear fashion more mindfully by extending the lifespan of garments and saving manufacturing emissions of new garments being made,” co-founder Georgie Hyatt tells us. “With the climate crisis at the forefront of our minds, Rotaro is a way for you to still express yourself this party season and explore new brands and styles without the cost to the planet.”

We can’t think of anything better to wear to our Christmas party than this disco blazer by Anouki.

Paco Rabanne via Cocoon

“From shimmering Paco Rabanne classics to crystal-embellished Prada, you’ll have endless plus-ones to up your festive looks.  With social events in the calendar, especially this Christmas season, we’re all excited to have reasons to dress up again and what better way to access a wide range of brands and designs, plus tap into colours and prints you might not go for in your everyday wardrobe,” says founder Ceanne Fernandes-Wong. “It’s the perfect solution for the bag lover who wants to enjoy fashion in a smarter, more sustainable way.”

Better yet, the service has just launched its flexi membership, meaning you can tap into the full collection after paying a base fee and choose to access bags for one week at a time instead of a full month. Perfect for a party season filled with different plans.

Kitri via On Loan

Come December, we are embracing all things festive, which is exactly what this dress by Kitri represents. Onloan works on a membership basis, where renters can select a certain number of pieces per month for a set price. It’s ideal if you’re pretty booked out for the whole month with various celebrations, just pay your monthly fee and select your items from the likes of Shrimps, Kitri, Stine Goya and more.

Daily Sleeper via By Rotation

“Christmas is a time where you can push the boat out with your style, experiment with colours, textures, shapes and really go all out; I’m talking sequins, feathers and serious glam,” notes By Rotation founder Kabra-Davies.

“As these more statement pieces are better suited to those wear-once moments, it makes sense to rent as it is a much more affordable and sustainable way to wear a variety of looks all season long, instead of buying a whole new wardrobe that come January, would realistically all be shoved to the back of your wardrobe anyway,” she notes.

We’re loving this festive red set by Sleeper, who says you can’t party in your pyjamas?

Amina Muaddi via Front Row

“At Front Row, we pride ourselves on our curation, on our ability to connect women with the brands and fashion by democratising fashion and making luxury fashion, accessible fashion,” says founder Shika Bodani. “From Elie Saab to Rixo, Front Row’s platform features clothing and accessories from over 50 international luxury brands, making it the ultimate destination to rent pieces straight from the runway.”

If Cinderella were to wear a shoe today, it would without a doubt be a pair of Amina Muaddi heels. “I’ve had a love for fashion as long as I can remember,” the designer previously told us. “My first inspiration and icon was my mother. She had a great sense of style and combined the Eighties and Nineties together.” Muaddi’s signature flared heel is a must for this party season, as she strikes the balance between statement and wearability.

The Vampire’s Wife via My Wardrobe HQ

It doesn’t get more festive than a dress from The Vampire’s Wife. Designer Susie Cave is praised for understanding perfectly what women look and feel good in. The result? Beautiful feminine dresses that are designed to stand the test of time and make you feel confident, season after season. Rent this beautiful style from My Wardrobe HQ for less than £20.

Saks Potts via Whering

“Choosing to experiment with your holiday outfits through rental is a vital component of end-of-year rituals for me. Especially at this time of year, where we’re wanting to celebrate the year’s achievements through partywear and generally make more,” Whering’s founder Bianca Rangecroft explains.

“I love the idea of being able to be a different version of myself at every gathering, whilst getting that newest fix without the guilt,” she notes.

We can’t think of a better way to dress up than wearing Saks Potts’ signature shimmer.
